When growing cattleyas in the house, it is important to have a watering schedule, especially when growing them in clay pots, as it is harder then to gauge when they are dry. If the plant is in a 6-inch clay pot, you should water a minimum of once a week. With a smaller hybrid growing in a plastic pot, the best way to gauge when the plant needs watering is by picking it up to judge the weight and watering when light in weight. When you are watering, inspect the plant for both active growth and plump bulbs. When a plant is actively growing, the pot will dry out twice as fast, and sometimes this growth coincides with the colder months when the heat is on so you want to make sure it gets a lot of water. Dehydrated or shriveled bulbs indicate that the plant is not getting enough water.
